Amanda Tallman: Finding Strength Through Service and Community

Growing up in Michigan, Amanda Tallman became accustomed to life on the move. Her father worked for the airlines, and her family traveled frequently. Although many people dream of a life filled with travel, Amanda longed for something different: structure, purpose, and the opportunity to serve. She found all three in the military, where the mission and values aligned with her own.

In 2007, Amanda joined the U.S. Army and later deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. She began her career as a military police soldier and MK19 gunner. The Army opened the door to new opportunities, including the Green to Gold program, through which Amanda earned her degree and received a commission as a military intelligence officer.

One experience connected to her service in Afghanistan had a lasting impact on Amanda. A team leader she respected and admired later died by suicide. In response to that loss, Amanda created a nonprofit organization that provides counseling services to first responders, veterans, and their families. Through this work, she advances her belief that connection, community, and access to support can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Today, Amanda is pursuing her DBH (Doctorate in Behavior Health) at Arizona State University as she continues her commitment to helping others. She also remains deeply connected to the veteran community and is a strong supporter of HAV.

Amanda served as HAV’s Grand Marshal in 2023[1], while navigating serious health challenges and multiple surgeries. During that difficult period, HAV became an important source of encouragement and connection.

Reflecting on that difficult period, Amanda shared, “HAV was a huge source of support. The people I met and the care they showed me helped give me the strength to make it through that time.”

As a social worker, Amanda understands the importance of relationships and community to overall well-being. But through her own experience, she also learned firsthand just how powerful that connection can be.

For Amanda, Veterans Day is an opportunity to celebrate the connection shared across the veteran community. Regardless of branch, era of service, or background, every veteran has a story worth hearing. It is a day to honor those stories and remind veterans that they are part of a community where they are seen, supported, and valued.
